After the course, we were posted to Shillong.
Knowing we won't be able to come to this part of the world in near future. We decided to visit our relatives in Mumbai Pune before proceeding to Shillong.
While planning for this trip was on, I was also discussing with W/C Bajwa about sending our luggage to Shillong. Plans for the hiring of a truck and when to dispatch the luggage were discussed.
After calculating the joining time, we finalised the dates for Our journey as well as for dispatch of the luggage.
Due to some spadework by us or maybe HQ, EAC had informed CDM that those posted to Command after the course will have to stay at Peak where 509 SU was based as no married accommodation was available at Hq EAC which was located almost 1000 to 1500 feet below and about 4-6 KM by hilly road.
We packed our luggage. All ready for loading in the truck. Luggage which was to go with us on the trip as well as on train journey from Hyderabad to Shillong was kept separate.
It was a finely tuned plan. There was a gap of only two days between our return from the trip loading of the truck and the commencement of the journey to Shillong.
We returned from the Mumbai Pune trip to an empty and fully packed house. There were still two days to go before we loaded the truck and boarded the train. For these two days, we had all our meals in RSI which was just across the road.
On the appointed date everything worked like a dream. The truck came at the promised time. When it reached our house it was already loaded with luggage of three officers Bajwa and two Army Officers. All going to Shillong. I could not see how our luggage can be loaded in a truck, which to us appeared already full. They opened the tailboard hooked the thick steel cables to hold it in place and loaded our luggage in whatever place was in left the truck and on the tailboard. After properly securing the load and putting a tarpaulin the truck departed.
Transport to take us to the railway station had also arrived.
After sending the truck, we got in the transport and left for the railway station.
Bye-bye 279/3 Allenby Lines.
We had some wonderful times there.

Reached Hyderabad Railway Station well in time to catch our train to Howrah.

Howrah station.
At Howrah, we had to wait for 48 hours as our connecting train to Gauhati was after 48 hours.
On enquiry at MCO Howrah came to know that there was a Sainik Aramgrah at the end of platform no 6. Went there and got a room and settled down.
When I was going around the station saw that there was a State Bank of India Branch at the station. Due to a welcome event, that branch and the kind-hearted Branch Manager will be fondly remembered forever.
It happened so.
Because we had planned trip to Mumbai - Pune and as long journey to Shillong was involved. I had drawn advance on posting and advance of pay. Now I do not remember the total amount I had. All the money was handed over to Priti. Being the good financial manager that she is, she made out different envelopes for Pune, Mumbai, Secunderabad, train, Gauhati and finally for  Shillong. Each envelope contained money that was allocated for that place/purpose etc.
Somewhere along, with the passage of time, we realised that one of the hundred Re note was slightly torn. Shopkeepers and vendors were not accepting it. At that time it did not ring any alarm bells or cause us any concern as we kept the torn note away and took out one note from other envelopes.
By the time we reached Howrah Station, to add to the torn note, our spending slightly exceeded what we had planned. We had to dip in and take out maybe two notes from Gauhati/Shillong envelope.  At Howrah Station, we were left only with two one hundred Rupee notes one of which was that torn note.
As we had to travel from Gauhati to Shillong in a taxi, and we did not know exactly what would be the charges, we were loath to take out any more money from the remaining envelope. In fact, we could not afford to do that.
After reaching Howrah with 48 hours wait, I tried to give the torn note to every trader, vendor, cooli, Chaiwala, coffeewala etc without any success. So effectively We had only 100 Re. I was worried.
It was at such a time that saw State Bank Branch at the station. When I saw this SBI branch at the railway station, desperate that we were, I marched into the Manager's Office. Explained our predicament and presented him with the torn 100 rupee note. He was a very good fellow & gave me a brand new crisp 100 Re note. I thanked him profusely and ran all the way to Sanik Aramgrah to give this very good news to Priti who was very very worried and close to tears.
Her smile on realising that we now had all of 200 was worth all the gold in the world.

We had gone on an Andaman Nicobar Trip in January 2015.
Ajeet & co travelled to Calcutta by air. We did Calcutta l trip by train. we had rendezvoused at Calcutta.
Did Andaman trip and on return to Calcutta Ajeet & co returned to Delhi.
At Howrah Station, we saw the state Bank Of India's Branch. It brought back a flood of memories. And story of 100 Re note. After my return, I had written about this incident in my blog on 01Feb 15. To see the blog go here.

Victoria Memorial.
After exchanging the torn hundred rupee note we were better off.
With that, now princely sum of 200 Re we decided to do a little bit of sightseeing.
Went by tram and Metro to Victoria memorial.
That was our first experience with Metro.
It was also the first time that Ajeet Anuj and seen escalators. They had whale of a time going up on the escalator and coming down by stairs and going up again. There were plenty of other kids doing the same :-) Finally, we had to drag them away from the escalators!
By the time we reached Victoria Memorial, it was evening and getting dark. It did not make much difference as the building itself was well lit inside and out.
It is white Marble and of very grand design with lots of beautiful statues.
Extract if information about Victoria Memorial from Wikipedia is given in mapograph

Guwahati Railway Station.
Now, do not remember what time we reached Guwahati nor how much the taxi fellow charged us for the journey from Guwahati Railway Station to Air Force Station at peak.

Shillong.
By the time we reached Shillong, it was getting late and quite dark. We thought it would be better if we had something to eat before we reached Peak. Our driver took us to the bus stand at Shillong. We did not see any restaurant, but there were lots of huts/shacks serving food. Mainly rice, dal and vegetable. We settled in front of one of the shacks and had the fare on offer. The best part of this dinner was that it was well within the budget of extremely limited money left with us.
By the time we finished dinner, it was night. The sky had become overcast and started raining hard with very strong winds. After dinner left for the peak.
The road had a lot of hairpin bends and climbed steeply.

SP 110/4, Peak.
After dinner started for Peak and our house.
By the time our taxi, loaded with luggage had started the final climb to the peak, night had already fallen. It was raining, accompanied by strong winds. Maybe half a kilometre or so short of sub guard room, the road was totally blocked as due to rain and high winds, a huge tree had fallen across the road. Took small items of luggage and started walking to the guard room. The taxi driver was a decent fellow. He also picked up a couple of items. Walking through the drizzle in pitch darkness at an unknown place was something we are not likely to forget.
At guard room, men were very cooperative. The orderly officer was contacted. Transport and manpower were organized. I took the transport up to the roadblock. Taxi with our luggage was on the other side of the fallen tree. Luggage from the taxi was carried across the roadblock to transport. Finally, after a couple of hours of delay due to a fallen tree, we finally reached SP 110.
Our house was the last on the road before it took a U-turn and went to the houses located behind our row of houses.
At the beginning of the turn, a footpath went straight ahead and led from the road to small Khasi village with few hutments. This footpath was in regular use by the locals who seemed to have free access to the road.
Our House had four fireplaces. Twice a month a contractor’s truck used to dump around three tons of bituminous coal by the roadside in front of our block. It was supposed to be used in fireplaces. The truckload was for all four houses. It was a big operation carting our coke to the first floor. The main effort was by the maidservant but everyone pitched in. We were amazed to see that even though locals passed by the dumped coal they never ever pilfered even a single piece. Hats off to their honesty and moral values.
Lighting fireplaces and heating up the house by fireplaces was also a totally novel experience. Never repeated after that.
There was no KV at Peak. Ajeet Anuj went down to KV located at EAC. They commuted in a mini-coach. By the time they returned it was fairly late.
I used to scooter down for work. It was normal for all the EAC officers staying at peak and so was taken in stride
From the terrace of the house and even standing by the roadside, we had an uninterrupted view across the gently rolling hills as far as the eye could see. The sight of endless lush green rolling hills was totally out of this world. An experience of a lifetime.
We were told that close to the sub guard room, there was a very scenic spot from where one could have a fantastic view of Shillong. It was called Shillong view Point. Further on, the road passed very close to Liatkor Peak.
There was no TV in those days. There were no smartphones.
Every opportunity we had we went to Shillong viewpoint. Went climbing the Liatkor Peak. Even explored the countryside around Khasi village next to our house.
The term “Quality time” was not coined then. But we can confidently say that not only at Peak but even at Upper Shillong we did spend such marvellous “quality time” which today’s generation cannot even imagine.

Mumbai - Pune Trip-1988.
From Air Headquarters we were, posted to Collage of Defence Management (CDM) to undergo Long Defence Management Course (LDMC).
New places we saw and our time during that one year, of course, are covered in the blog "Secunderabad - 1987 - 1988".
After the course, our postings were received. Bajwa and I were posted to Hq Eastern Air Command Located at Shillong.
Knowing we were going to Shillong we took some policy decisions.
First was that we may not be able to visit relatives in Pune, Mumbai so we should visit them before going to Shillong.
The second was, home visits will not be possible in non-warrant year.
Third, was to use Shillong stay as an opportunity to visit "Seven Sisters", seven states collectively called the North Eastern States during non-warrant years or when we do no go on home.
The first decision resulted in the Pune Mumbai trip before leaving for Shillong. Due to distances and journey time involved joining time worked quite a bit. I do not remember the exact number of days but they were sufficient for us to go to visit these places. After finalising details about the hiring and loading schedule of the truck, we were ready for packing.
We packed ALL the luggage ready for loading. The luggage we would require for the journey from Secunderabad to Shillong was packed and kept separately before we left for Pune-Mumbai. So after packing the luggage we left for a trip to Mumbai and Pune.

This blog is based totally on the recollections and memory of Priti.
As this was a visit planned just to go and meet as many relatives as possible during joining time on posting, perforce it was a hurried visit. I do not think we stayed more than one night at any place. To some, it was only a day-long visit.
We went to Pune First.

PUNE.

VIJU.
The first port of call was Viju. He was staying in few rooms allotted in the officer's mess of Southern Command. Uday and Sudhir came down to meet us there. Stayed overnight.
Kaka and Kaku were also in Pune at that time. They were staying with Vinayak Mama in Chinchwad. The next day from Viju's place went to Chinchwad.

ANNA (Vinayak) MAMA.
He was in the army. After retirement, he was working for Bajaj in their security section and staying in Chinchwad.
No details of his house location. No photos as well.
That was only the second time in my life I was meeting Vinayak Mama. First time when I was around 10 years old and we had gone to Pathankot where he was posted.
The only thing I remember is that Mama's son said that he was maha impressed that I was a pilot in the air force.
As house location is not available Anna Mama is not on the interactive map.
From there to Mandya's Place.

MANDYA.
From Chinwad along with Kaka, Kaku went to Mandya's place in Koyhrud.
Amit and Namita were there.
I think that was the first time that Ajeet Anuj had met Mandya, Vahini and Amit, Namita.
This visit yielded a couple of memorable photos
From Mandya with Kaka and Kaku left for Mumbai.

MUMBAI.

PRADIP.
Went to Pradips place. stayed overnight before going to Shrikant and Dada at Borivili.

SHRIKANT.
After Pradip went to Dada and Shrikant's place. I think stayed there for two nights. During the stay on the suggestion of Pradip went to see Lion and Tiger safari in Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

TIGER & LION SAFARI.
Tiger and Lion Safari in Sanjay Gandhi National Park was quite memorable.
A few square kilometres area has been fenced off. Few lions and tigers are kept separately in this fenced-off area. Due to limited spaces and route followed by the coach sighting of Lions and tigers is near certainty.
A special minibus with protective grill all around takes tourists through this fenced-off area on a safari.
During the safari, Anuj was sitting right at the front, next to the windshield. It so happened that a pair of lions came walking towards the coach right in the centre of the road. Our driver had to perforce stop. Lioness walked past by the coach but The lion stood on its hind legs and placed his front paws on the windshield, inches from Anuj. He let out a shout and ducked below the windshield. Recovered slowly and sat erect. After a few seconds Lion also got down and went on its own way.
That was one close encounter for Anuj, myself included.
Later had a teat of Kulfi for all.

ULKA.
From Shrikant left for Ulkai. Ulka was staying in Navi Nagar Colaba. From the caption of the photos, it is obvious that we were there on 07 May 1988.
Parag was a babe in arms.
I do not recollect much of the visit.
I think we stayed there for two days and then returned to Secunderabad.

279/3 ALLENBY LINES.
Returned to a fully packed and almost vacant home in Secunderabad.

 Secunderabad - 1987.
From Air Headquarters we were, posted to Collage of Defence Management (CDM) to undergo Long Defence Management Course (LDMC).
As it was a course there was no chance of taking leave to go on trips. Still, it did not stop us from seeing new places and fun time in Secunderabad.

279 / 3, Allenby Lines.
We were lucky to get an MES quarter. Lucky because CDM had a very limited number of MES quarters. So a lottery system was employed. Names of all the officers detailed for the course were put on slips and a blind draw conducted to decide which officers would be allotted MES quarters and who all will have to do running around to get an MES acquired house or sponsor a house for MES acquisition,  My name turned up so I was saved a lot of running around. Most of the course officers had to stay at Sainikpuri or Vayupuri in MES acquired houses.
We were allotted quarter number 279 / 3, Allenby Lines.
RSI was right across the road. There used to be a film show once a week and we used to just walk across the road for the movie. If we liked it we saw it or just walked back to the house.
In those days there were a lot of grape vineyards in the vicinity of Allenby Lines. Few within walking distance. In grape season Ajeet Anuj used go walking to the nearest vineyard with 10/- Rs and return with almost half a bag full of grapes.
During one year stay at Allenby Lines, Secunderabad lots and lots of photos were taken. Trying to add as many as possible in a group of 10s in the Mapograph(my google map).
For photos of our stay at Secunderabad go to the link of Main Album no8 @

EME Centre Swimming Pool.
We found out that there was an Olympic standard swimming pool controlled and managed by EME Centre. As luck would have it, it was within cycling/walking distance from our house. One day went and checked it out. It was very clean and well maintained. The filtration plant was good and working full time. A lifeguard and an instructor were always present during the pool timings. Separate time blocks were allotted for officers, JCOs, other ranks and their families. The pool, simply too good.
It was a simple matter to obtain passes for us. Swimsuits were bought/dug out from the clothes closet. During the summer we started going to the pool on regular basis. Ajeet and Anuj learnt/ polished their swimming skills. We had a lot of fun. It was the best of quality time with family.

Holiday outings. In the 1980s surrounding areas and locality around our house in Allenby lines were very sparsely inhabited. Our house was almost the last housed on the road. Beyond that, there were no houses and it was open ground with a lot of hillocks made up of huge boulders or rather rocks that may have weighed hundreds/thousands of tones. It represented the typical boulder cum rock-strewn landscape of Hyderabad/Secunderabad. The landscape had a strange beauty of its own. Climbing and walking among those rocks was a lot of fun. Despite a busy schedule and studies of the course, we made it a point to go out walking in the surrounding hillocks and open ground. On Sundays and holidays used to go for walks in hillocks made of and full of huge boulders. In one such trip saw barrack and the room where Winston Churchill had stayed as a lieutenant.

Ajeet Anuj had Navratri/ Diwali holidays of 7 days. During that break Priti, Ajeet and Anuj made a trip to Indore.
Another highlight of Secunderabad stay was that Surekha and Charumavshi visited us in Secunderabad.
All in all that one year course stay in Secunderabad was quite good.

Places we saw during the year
Golconda Fort.
Hussain Sagar.
Birla Mandir.
BM Birla Planetarium.
Salar Jung Museum.

Golconda Fort.
Took Surekha to Golconda Fort. From the photos, it appears that young Puja and Charu Mavshi had not come on this sightseeing trip.
A vast sprawling fort mostly in ruins. But whatever buildings are in better shape indicate the grandeur of the place as it would have been in its hay day. Archaeological Department has made valiant efforts to beautify the place by well-maintained gardens and lawns.
To see the full fort area, one full day's trip is needed. Anything less than a day one can only rush through the fort without really seeing much and likely yo miss out on some important places.  Info on Golconda fort from the wiki is included in mapograph.
Information from the internet given in mapograph.

Hussain Sagar.
On the way back home from Golconda Fort stopped at Hussain Sagar. Hussain Sagar was being developed as an attraction with a bit of a park, a promenade and a bit of water sport. Did a boat ride before returning home.
Information from the internet given in mapograph
To see photos with caption go to shared album @
Birla Mandir.
Birlas have built temples all over India. The temples built by them are constructed mainly from white marble. They are very grand. They are as much a place of worship as a tourist attraction and a place worth seeing. We went to see the Birla Mandir in Hyderabad. It is located on top of a hill and is near Hussain Sagar. Do not remember much details about the temple itself. Information from the internet given in mapograph.

BM Birla Planetarium.
The first-ever planetarium Priti and I had seen was in 1974 in Calcutta. We were very impressed by the whole show and how the planets and stars were shown. Skyline of Calcutta as seen fro the top of the planetarium was also shown. I was so good that I still remember it being shown to us in that show.
It is very surprising and sad that though I remember some details about Calcutta Planetarium seen in 1974 even after all this time I do not remember a single thing about Hyderabad Planetarium we saw in 1987-88. To tell the truth, it is only because of the photo album that I know we did visit it with Ajeet and Anuj. I only hope they were also impressed y the first visit to  Birla Planetarium and do remember that visit.
While searching for its location I saw a huge complex of Birla science centre, Birla Science Museum, Nirmala Birla Art Gallery etc. All these were not there in 1987-88.

 Allenby Lines 279/3.
Allenby Lines 279/3 end of the course, as well as our stay in Secunderabad, was coming to an end. Postings were received. From our course, Bajwa and I were posted to Hq Eastern Air Command Located at Shillong.
We knew it would not be possible to come to visit our relatives in Pune and Mumbai all the way from Shillong so we decided to visit these places before we left for Shillong.
Due to distances and journey time involved joining time worked out a hell of a lot. I do not remember the exact number of days but they were sufficient for us to go to visit Pune and Mumbai.
So after finalising arrangements and loading of the truck with Bajwa we packed ALL the luggage ready for loading and left for a trip to Mumbai and Pune. Luggage we would require for the journey from Secunderabad to Shillong was packed and kept separately before we left for Pune-Mumbai.
On our return as everything was packed, we were eating in RSI for two days and sleeping on the beddings from the holdall.
After two days of eating in RSI etc the truck which we were sharing with Bajwa reached our house for loading. It already had luggage of three other officers and looked almost full with no place within the truck. It won't be an exaggeration to say that all our luggage was accommodated on the tailboard of the truck.
After loading the truck we left for Hyderabad Railway Station to catch the Howrah train.

Delhi - 1985 - 1987.
We were posted at Delhi between 1985 - 1987.
Two trips done by us during our stay in Delhi have been written about in my blog “1986 Trips”.
So why this travel blog stretching over a period of two years?
Travel Blog is about seeing new places of attractions and interest. Most of the places of attractions in Delhi were seen by us when we had gone to attend Air Force Day Investiture Parade in 1983.
This blog is about some new places and sights we saw spread over a period of our stay between 1985 -1987. Hence a separate blog.
Initial stay in Delhi was in the House of S/L Ganesh, We were together in 101 sqn way back in 1966-67. He was an Engineering Officer. He was going on leave for two months. No one wanted to leave unattended house in Delhi due to fear of theft and robbery. In such cases, some portion of the house was offered to brother officer who was waiting for allotment of a house. for two months at least it was a win-win situation for both. So for those first two months, we stayed in quarter no B-32,  Moti Bagh.
Rail Museum was within walking distance,
In retrospect, it is really surprising that during our two-year stay except for Rail Museum, we did not revisit even once, any of the places seen earlier in 1983.
This could be because we were forced to stay in Noida. Air Hq was 25 Odd kilometres form house and I and all the officers of AF, Army and Navy staying in Noida had to travel almost 50 odd kilometres every day.
To add to this I only had a scooter and it was not practical going all over Delhi for all 4 of us on a two-wheeler. We still managed to see some new places between 85 & 87.
One may wonder at the wording "we were forced to stay in Noida"
The reasons behind this are given below.
Defence Services were given land at cheaper rates by Govt of UP, to build housing for defence personnel. As a result, the first projects to come up were Jalvayu Vihar and AWWA in 21 and 24 sectors respectively. These were for officers and men of Air Force/ Navy and Army respectively. Hundreds of officers, including air rank officers, had taken a loan and bought flats in these projects. All under the assumed premise that rents will pay for the EMI and they would have a house of their own when they retire. However, Noida of The 1980s was a cluster of villages. Considered a place back and beyond. A backward place without proper market or good schools. There was only one convenient road with only one Yamuna bridge connecting Delhi and Noida. Respective service head quartes were about 25 odd kilometres.
Houses in these Service Hq sponsored projects were lying vacant. No one posted to Delhi and waiting for allotment of quarters was willing to rent a house in Noida for reasons given above because of the hardships of staying in Noida would entail.
In the absence of rental income, those officers and men, including air rank officers of all the three services were finding it extremely difficult to pay the EMI’s and survive. There was hue and cry. Resulting in a collective decision by all three services. A dictate was issued – if you want a house go to Noida or stay in mess. Faced with this, almost every officer waiting for a house moved into MES acquired house in Noida.
We were allotted quarter no F/23 in F block, Sector 21 Noida. This was a model house, first to be made ready as a showpiece to prospective buyers. AVM and Mrs Nair and Sree Kumar were our neighbours.
I took leave for a few days to get Ajeet and Anuj admitted to the only KV in Noida. There was no problem with Ajeet's admission. 3rd standard in which Anuj had to be admitted already had 40 students. Officially that was the limit of a class. I was told that Hazaratgang KV had a vacancy in 3rd standard. There was no question of sending Anuj to that place. For the next few days, I was spending maximum time in KV. One day a clerk told me that one student of 3rd standard was leaving the school as his father was posted out. He told me to come once school leaving certificate to that student was issued. I was on the spot as that fellows school leaving certificate was issued and I submitted an application for admission of Anuj. It was given. I was so happy that I took a packet of sweets and gave it to that clerk who had helped me!
One we settled down and things became a regular routine, one of the first place we visited was Appu Ghar.

 Appu Ghar.
After having settled down we had time to think of other things.
India had hosted the 1982 Asian games. That was also the year Black & White TV had come to India.
A live elephant named Appu was the Asian Games mascot.
To commemorate the Asian Games, the First amusement park was named Appu Ghar and inaugurated in 1984.
Those days Appu Ghar was the talk of the town. Being the first Amusement park with state of the art games, slides and other attractions. It was a must-visit place in Delhi those days.
We also visited it.
There were a large number of attractions for children and adults to enjoy. Memory fails me to recount all the attractions visited by us.
Today there is no trace of Appu Ghar anywhere as the leased land was taken back by the government for the use of the Supreme Court Of India, Pragati Maidan Metro Station and other departments.

India Gate.
One of the places we had not seen in 1983 was India Gate, the iconic monument at the end of Raj path facing The Rashtrapati Bhavan. Did visit it a couple of times. It is a memorial for all those Indians in defence forces who were killed in world war I. Their names are engraved on the surface of the Gate. I have never seen anyone even glancing at those engraved names L
Priti’s friend Priya was also with us. She was wife of FL GV Kumar who as an equipment officer was with us in Sulur.
The outing was enjoyed by all.

Rose Garden. Noida.
On the road from Delhi after crossing the bridge on Yamuna Canal, just before entering Noida proper, a very beautiful rose garden was created and maintained by the Noida administration. We visited that garden quite f few times, On two occasions I had carried a camera with me. Our photos taken on both occasions are given here in one lot rather than making two entries.
Now there is not even a trace of that garden.
A beautiful place is lost forever.

26 January illumination, Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On the 26th of January, every year Rashtrapati Bhavan and the building blocks offices of central ministries facing Vijay chowk are illuminated with thousands and thousands, millions of light bulbs. It is a beautiful sight to see Rashtrapati Bhavan and its complex of buildings illuminated. But if possible one must not miss the moment when these get illuminated simultaneously.
As it gets totally dark a switch is thrown. Rashtrapati Bhavan and each and every surrounding building are lit up simultaneously in a single instant.
We had heard about it. So on 26 January 198,7 Mulayes and we did a trip to see the illumination of Rashtrapati Bhavan and its complex of buildings. Every word we had heard was true. Truly a sight to remember and travel 25 kilometres in biting cold of Delhi.

AP Express. New Delhi Railway Station.
It was now time to leave Delhi.
In February 1987 we were posted to the College of Defence Management, Secunderabad.
The exact date when we left Delhi has been lost in the past.
Photos taken onboard AP Express when we left for Secunderabad have been preserved.

In 1986 we were staying at quarter no F - 23 at Jal Vayu Vihar Noida. During those days we were posted at Air Hq, Delhi.
We did Two Trip s in 1986
1. Dehradun - Mussoorie- Hardwar. And;
2. Agra and Fatehpur sikri.

Dehradun - Mussoorie - Hardwar.

F-23, Sector 21, Noida.
During those days:
we were posted at Air Hq, Delhi and staying at Sector 21, quarter no F - 23 at Jal Vayu Vihar Noida.
Viju was commanding a Base Work Shop in Dehradun.
Ravi after having cleared selection, SSB etc was selected for the Army. He was undergoing training at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. On the completion of his course, He was passing out and being commissioned in the infantry on 4th June 1986.
Priti had decided to go for this passing out parade. Aai, Appa from Indore wanted to attend his passing out parade. Jiji and Bhupi also accompanied them. They Came to Delhi and stayed with us for a couple of days. Viju came down from Dehradun to pick up them up. It was decided that Ajeet would go with them. Priti, Anuj and I would join them later.
We left by bus for Dehradun on 1June 1986.
During the family gup-shup it was decided that after the passing out parade we would see Haridwar, Missouri and any other tourist place which could be seen in one day's outing.

 Viju House.
Ajet had already gone to Dehradun with Aai Appa and co.
We left with Anuj on 1 Jun by bus for Dehradun.
Do not recollect the location of Viju home. Assuming that it was in Cantonment an arbitrary location has been selected as his home location.

Indian Military Academy.
Indian Military Acadamy is the final stage of training for ex NDA and direct entry cadets. Training for Ex NDA cadets is of one year while for direct entry cadets it is of one and a half years duration after which they are commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army.
Traditionally the final steps of the passing out parade leads cadets through the portals of Chetwood hall. They enter the hall as cadets where the the "Stars" are put on their shoulders and they come out as an Officer. This tradition is being followed since the formation of Acadamy.
All of us attended the passing out parade. It was a moment of immense happiness and great pride for all of us.
Information about Indian Military Acadamy available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

National Forest Research Institute.
As per viju’s suggestion one day Jiji, Bhupi and four of us went to see National Forest Research Institute of India. He said it was a premier institute, one of its kind in the world.
It is spread over a large area. Saw many unique and rare trees. Enjoyed it. Unfortunately do not remember more details.

Haridwar.

One day went to Haridwar. We went by what is called one tonner. Went in the morning and returned to Dehradun by evening/night. Must have seen major places of attraction. Had a dip in Ganga at Har Ki Pauri. All our sins, as on that date were washed away :-)

Do not remember too many details.

Sahastradhara Natural Spring.
Those days Anuj had a strange ailment. He used to develop some sort of rash and pimples on top of his scalp. They were quite a nuisance and also a bit painful. Priti tried all sorts of things without success.

During general talks, we came to know that about 20 odd KMs from Dehradun there is a place called Sahastradhara Natural Spring. These were sulphur springs having medicinal qualities and particularly helpful for the treatment of skin diseases. Priti told Viju to arrange a trip to that place for so she could take Anuj for a dip in the hope that his problem of rash and pimples would be cured.

So one day we went to Sahastradhara. Do not remember many details.

Do remember that rash and pimple problem of Anuj did not go away despite having a dip in sulphur springs. Finally, It was cured only after Priti applied a paste of powered naphthalene balls in coconut oil for many days running. That brought a great sigh of relief.

Malsi Deer Park,

A one day trip to Mussoorie was planned. Among many other tourist attractions near Mussorie,  there were two attractions we planned to visit. One was Malsi Deer Park which was on the way to Mussorie and other was Kempty Water Falls,

So the day we went to see Mussorie, we stopped at Malsi Deer Park.

Do not remember much but from the photographs, it seems that all the kids had a grand time.
Malsi Deer Park is a tiny zoological park, 10 km away from Dehradun, in the foothills of the Shivalik range. Housed within its rocky and forested environment are species such as deer, monkeys, peacocks, two-horned deer, and Nilgai. The park also attracts migratory birds from the different corners of India. Inside the Malsi deer park, there is a children park and well-stocked canteen for eatables. Malsi Deer Park is a must-visit for avid bird watchers and nature lovers.
Information about Malsi Deer Park available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Kempty Falls, Mussoorie.
After Masli Deer Park went to Kempty Falls, Mussoorie.
From the crowds, at the falls it was obvious that it was a very popular spot. Water fell from a  great height. Considering ti was 4th June there was plenty of water.
Information about Kempty waterfalls available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Mussoorie.
After Malsi Deer Park went to Mussoorie. Almost every hill station established by Britishers had a central point a junction called “The Mall”. It was the place where Terrain permitting, The Malls had a bit of open space around which most popular shops, restaurants, hotels and cinema halls etc were located. It was a place to do window shopping and taking a stroll. It was 'the' get-together place for friends and tourists to gather in the evening.
Went around the mall and other places. Near the bus stand, there were pony wallas. Ajeet, Anuj and Bonnie etc had a pony ride.
After spending some time in Mussoorie returned to Dehradun.

Lunch stop.
On the way back stopped for lunch and ice-cream break at a place called Doiwala. We all Had a siesta as well under the shade of a huge tree. It was a very laid down and relaxed affair. Finally, it was time to board the one tonner once again and set course for Dehradun.
Were back in Viju place by evening night.

AGRA - FATHEHPUR SIKRI - 10 October 1986.

 F-23, Sector 21, Noida.

By October 1986 we had almost spent a year and a half in Delhi. We had yet to see Taj Mahal.
One of the friends suggested that it would be a good idea to include  Fatehpur Sikri, a World Heritage Site, as well on the same trip. Bit of discussion took place and we decided to go to Fatehpur Sikri as well.

Taj Express was specifically introduced by Indian Railways for the convenience of foreigners. It used to depart in the early morning from New Delhi Railway Station and return to New Delhi in the evening on the same day. Giving visitors sufficient time to visit The Taj Mahal as well as surrounding attractions. The was also one of the highspeed trains which had reduced travel time from three hours plus to just about two and a half hours. As a result, it was the most popular train to travel between Delhi & Agra. We decided to travel by this train.

It used to leave New Delhi railway station around 6:00 AM. Distance between our house and New Delhi railway station was more than 22 or 23 KMs. Keeping margin for any unforeseen delay we decided to start very early.

10th  October saw all four of us on the scooter setting course for the railway station at the ungodly hour of 4:30 AM in thick of Delhi winter. It was pitch dark. Not a soul around. Deserted roads. Naturally, we were stopped by a constable to check who could be driving around at that hour. Seeing the family he mellowed down but still wanted to challan us for riding 4 on a scooter. I told him I was a Wing Commander in the air force. Showed him my I card. He lectured me on breaking the law being from the defence. Heaved a sigh of relief when he let us go.
Reached the station well in time.

Agra Junction.
Agra Junction is locally and commonly called Idgah railway station as it is located in Idgah colony.
Reached Agra. As we got out of the station we were surrounded by touts. Every one of whom wanted to take us sightseeing on the best terms possible. Finally settled on one fellow. We told him that we wanted to see both Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri. He advised that we engage a taxi for the day which will take us to both the places and show all the worth seeing places. Accordingly, we hired a taxi. The taxi driver suggested that we go and see Fatehpur Sikri first and see Taj Mahal after we return from Fatehpur Sikri. This would ensure that unforeseen delays in Fatehpur Sikri, we would have sufficient time to catch the return train. We agreed.
From Agra Station set course for  Fatehpur Sikri.

Fatehpur Sikri.

Fatehpur Sikri.
Fatehpur Sikri is located 37 kilometres from Agra near Sikri village. In 16th century, Sufi Saint Salim Chisti was residing in Sikri village.
Mugal Emperor Akbar did not have a son and heir to the throne. He went and visited Salim Chisti at Sikri. The sain blessed the Emperor and predicted that a son will be born. The prediction came true and a son was born in 1562. He was named Salim who later became Emperor Jahangir. As thanksgiving, Akbar ordered building to a huge mosque.
A fort, grand palaces and many residential buildings were constructed near Sikri village. all constructions were done with red sandstone found in the area near Sikri. The new city was named Fatehpur to commemorate Akber's Victory over Gujrat. Later Akbar shifted the capital of Mughal empire to Fatehpur Sikri. It remained capital of the Mughal empire from 1571 to 1585. After which Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned due to water scarcity and the capital moved back to Delhi.
Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal architectural splendour at its height. Today the monuments have been declared as World heritage Site and are a major tourist attraction.

Tomb of Salim Chishti.
The very first place we saw in Fatehpur Sikri was Tomb of Salim Chishti.
It is situated in the huge paved courtyard of Jama Masjid. It is a very beautiful structure in white marble. Pillars and lintels have been beautifully engraved. Quite peaceful and sere atmosphere. Enjoyed going around.
Information about Kempty waterfalls available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Jama Masjid.
The moment you see Jama Masjid and enter its courtyard two things overwhelm you one the sheer size area wise and the huge huge arched gates.
Tomb of Salim Chisti is also located inside. There are verandahs all along the walls. Rooms have beautifully designed niches and windows.
Information about Jama Masjid available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Anup Talao.

Anup Talao, or ‘peerless pool’ is located in front of khawabgah, Akbar's private quarters. This is one of the most beautiful sites in all of Fatehpur Sikri. This square red sandstone tank measures approximately 30 meters on each side; in the middle of the tank is a  raised platform, and the platform is enclosed by an ornate balustrade. Attached to the central platform are four causeways, which connect the platform to the four sides of the tank. Originally the tank was connected to the waterworks system located on the northern side of the city.  The Anoop Talao was also acted as a venue for musical performances during Akbar's time. It is forever associated with Akbar's legendary court musician Tansen who, it is said, could light oil lamps with the magic of his voice.

Panch Mahal.

Of all the beautiful and grand buildings in Fatehpur Sikri Fort, your attention gets riveted on one five-storied building because of its unique architecture. Panch Mahal is rectangular in plan view with North-South alignment. Each higher floor is smaller in length. The peculiarity of the construction is that the floors are raised, one on top the other only from the southern end. Because of this and the decreasing size of each floor, viewed from the side building has a stepped appearance.
All the floors are without walls and are open from all sides. Each floor has ornate balustrade all around.
Truly a unique experience to see a unique building.
Information about Panch Mahal available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Diwan - E - Khas, Fatehpur Sikri.
In darbar of Mughal Emperor, there always was a place where the emperor gave audience to the general public. This hall was called Diwane Aam. (aam meaning ‘general’ or common)
There was another hall where only trusted few and his ministers etc were granted an audience and where conferences were held. This was called Diwane Khas. (Khas means ‘special’ or ‘favoured’).
Thre is a huge central pillar with intricate and beautiful carvings. Diameter at the top is large and has plenty of space. Four arms radiate out from this central space on top of the pillar, connecting four sides on the room.
It is said that the Emperor used to sit in the throne installed on this central pillar.
Information about Diwan e Khas available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Agra.
Agra.
After leaving Diwan- e-Khas at Fatehpur Sikri left for Agra.

So far as I was concerned Agra began and ended with Taj Mahal. To stretch it a bit one can add ‘petha’ and also “Anguri Petha” which is a favourite of Priti. After reaching Agra first place we went to was The Agra fort.
Surfing around came across a web site by the Department of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh. Felt that for a Govt web site it was quite good. Here this is what it says about Agra. Browse through it, it is nice.

Agra is a city offering a discovery of the beautiful era. Agra has a rich history, reflected in its numerous monuments dotted in and around the city. The earliest citation for Agra comes from the mythological era, where the epic Mahabharata refer Agra as ‘Agravana’ meaning paradise in Sanskrit. ‘Ptolemy’, the famous second century A.D. geographer, was the first person who referred Agra with its modern name. The Modern Agra was founded by Sikandar Lodi, ruler of Lodi dynasty in 16th century. It was when Shah Jahan descended the Mughal throne that Agra reached the zenith of architectural beauty.

The city lies in the Western part of Uttar Pradesh on the bank of River Yamuna. Though the wonderful allure of the Taj Mahal attracts people from around the world over to Agra, it is not a standalone attraction. The city offers a trail of fascinating tombs and mausoleums to explore. Acclaimed for its lavish crafts like Pietra Dura (marble inlay) work, rugs and leather goods, and the luscious Petha, Agra equally caters well to shopaholics and foodies.

After reaching Agra first place we went to was The Agra fort.

Agra Fort.

Agra Fort, I do not remember much about the fort. What I do remember is that we were shown the bedroom of Emperor Shah Jahan from where, lying on his bed he used to gaze at Taj Mahal, the tomb he had built for his beloved wife. Outside this room sat for a photoshoot on a marble bench. Caught Taj mahal in the background. Almost the view of Taj which the Emperor would have got all those years back.

Information about Agra Fort available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

Taj Mahal.
From Agra Fort, we went to see the. Taj Mahal.
It is a magnificent building. A world heritage Site. One of the wonders of the world.
The symmetry, the architecture is mind-boggling.
The accuracy with which the inlay work has been done is simply amazing. How those craftsmen etched/removed the marble to the exact shape and size of the material to fill the etching without any mistakes or blemish is just unbelievable.
Spent lot of time going around admiring the beauty.
Finally, time was approaching when we had to leave for railway station if we were to catch Taj Express for our return journey.

Information about Taj Mahal available on internet web sites, mostly from the wiki, is included in the interactive map.

 F23, Sector 21, Noida.
Got down at New Delhi Railway station. Collected the scooter from scooter stand and returned to Noida and home. Luck was with us. No police fellow caught us during the return journey.

END OF TRIP.
