LISBON PART TWO.

In the square dedicated to King Pedro IV, better known as Rossio, amongst prominant structures around the Rossio there is the Neo Manueline Manueline railway station that serves the Sintra line, and the classical D. Maria I National Theatre. In and  the middle is the Suíça pastry shop, one of the oldest in the city, at the corner of a small street that links with Praça da Figueira.
Praça da Figueira is a commercial area, where you’ll find a statue of King JoãoI,and the confeitria Nacional  another famous pastry shop whose cakes you simply won’t be able to resist. These squares are flanked by the hills on which you can see the Castle, on one side, and the Carmo Convent on the other. A photo shoot inRossio Square and Praça da Figueira is irresistible.

With the increse in population it spilled out of the castle Hill and settled in the Rossio Square.Roughly Rossio is eqyuivalent to "Commons" meaning commonly held land.Till 1775 lot of important buildings were constructed, including one of the most important civil structure namely All Saints Royal Hospital. The personage gathering in these surroundings formed major historical events in Lisbon's history. In devastating 1775 earthquake except for Palace Of the Independence every building including All Saints Hospital was destroyed.
In 18th  centuary rebuilding of Rossio Square was under taken.Gradually, over a period of time column of King Pedro IV Marmaid Fountauns imported from france,Rossio Square Pavement was built in very typical Potrtugese Mosaic Pavement, which produces wonderful optical illusion,Rossio Train stationwith neo-manueline facade was also added. All these are not only beauttiful but historically importane for Lisbon.
During reconstruction a grid of roads was created which connects Rossio Square to all other impotiant places of lisbon. Three roads of this grid namely; (1) Rua da Prata, which means street of the Silver bacause after the reconstruction in 1775 this street was allotted to silversmiths,(2) R dos Fanqueiros,(street connecting Fanquerios) and (3) R Da Medalena. (street which connects Mdalena). These are beautiful tree lined avenues. These main roads and other minor roads also connects Rossio to another historical and important square ,namely Commercial Square.
The monuments and even the mossiac floorn of Rossio Square meke it a grand tourist attraction and a heaven for photo shoots for photo enthusiasts.

Most of the important banking and commercial establishment, important hotels and  historical buildings are situated on these avenues. Including Santa Justa List a Santa Justa Lift,a Cast-iron elevator with filigree details, now a tourist attraction and built in 1902, is also located on Rua da Prata.
A leisurely walk along the Rua da Prata which connects two most important squares of Lisbon namely   Rossio Square and commercial Square is an experience in itself.

After spending and ennojoying the beauty and sights of Rossio Square we started a walk towards Commercial Square.

Came across this statue of Dom Joao I,located in Figueira Square,on the way to Commercial Square.

The "U"shaped,Praça do Comércio or Commerce Square, was constructed in 1755 after the great earthquake of Lisbon destroyed most of Lsibon. Before the earthquake the most important royal complex, the Ribeira Palace, was situated on the site of the Praça do Comércio but this was totally destroyed by the tsunami that preceded the earthquake. The most prominent feature of the Ribeira Palace were two distinctive towers and their original design was incorporated into the two towers that over look the Tagus river. The Praça do Comércio is the largest of Lisbon’s mighty plazas that is positioned on the edge of the Tagus estuary. This location was traditional where traders would sell their foreign wares and financiers would fund perilous expeditions to the far reaches of the known world. The wealth of Portugal was channelled through this single point of the Praça de Comercio in English it  means Commercial Square. For visitors the square is both an appealing tourist sight and important transport hub.
Departing from the northern side are trams that head west to the Belem district and at the southern side is a ferry terminal that cross the River Tagus.
The Praça do Comércio Lisbon is one of the finest sections of the capital and indicates the power and influence Portugal once commanded.
Major tourist attraction the Praça do Comércio are the grandest of Lisbon’s squares with traditional painted buildings lining the three sides, magnificent statue of King José I in the centre and to the northern edge is the entrance to the RuaAugusta, which is marked by the decorative and ornate Arco da Rua Augusta(Arch of Triumph of August Street) .

The impressive Arco da Rua Augusta, which marks the entrance to the Rua Augusta, was only finished in 1875 almost a century after the original plans were drawn up. This delay allowed the inauguration of the tower to coincide with the centenary of the devastating earthquake. The three statues at the top of the tower represent Glory rewarding Valour and Genius and are part of the Portuguese coat of arms while the two seated figures at the base represent the two rivers of Portugal, the Tejo and Douro. For detailed info on Arch Of Triumph go here.

Equestrian Statue of King José I .The King on his horse is symbolically crushing snakes on his path.

In 1770, an international competition was held for the creation of a statue of King Joseph I of Portugal, based on drawings prepared by Eugenio dos Santos. It is widely believed that one of the motivations for the monumental sculpture’s prominent location was to honour the king’s capable response to the devastation caused by the earthquake of 1755. Joaquim Machado de Castro won the competition and cast the equestrian statue to represent the king, the first such statue to be cast in Portugal, which was unveiled on the king’s birthday in 1775. The statue remains today in the Praça do Comércio, a central point in Lisbon. Locals and tourists alike frequent the square, as they have done for centuries. The statue, considered the first work of public art in Portugal, marked a pivotal moment in the artistic career of Joaquim Machado de Castro, who became the official court sculptor of Portugal.

RIVERFRONT "THE BEACH"

The Beach

At the southern side of the Praça do Comércio is the, Cais das Colunas, a set of marble stairs, which lead down to the waters edge. These steps were installed so that royal dignitaries could receive a grand entrance to Lisbon. The origins for these steps date from before the 1755 earthquake when the steps would lead straight into the royal palace.
The river front has been beautified extended on Western side.Locals call it the beach.Nice place for a stroll and relaxation in the evenings.
